Braille Instruction Program

Opening the World of Literacy for Learners with Visual Impairments

At New Day Learning & Therapy Clinic, our Braille Program is designed to ensure that students who are blind or visually impaired have full access to literacy and academic learning through comprehensive and individualized Braille instruction. We believe that literacy is a fundamental right, and for many of our learners, Braille is the key to unlocking that right.

What is Braille?

Braille is a tactile reading and writing system used by individuals who are blind or have significant vision loss. It consists of raised dot patterns arranged in cells that represent letters, numbers, punctuation, and even musical and scientific notation. Braille allows individuals to read with their fingers and to write using specialized tools or digital devices.

Program Goals

Our Braille instruction program is committed to:

  • Developing foundational literacy through tactile reading and writing

  • Supporting academic achievement in alignment with the adapted UK National Curriculum

  • Promoting independence and access to printed and digital information

  • Empowering students with lifelong communication and learning skills

What We Teach

  • Pre-Braille Skills:
Early tactile discrimination, hand strength, finger dexterity, and tracking skills necessary for future Braille reading and writing.

  • Grade 1 and Grade 2 Braille:
Instruction in the Braille alphabet, contractions, punctuation, numbers, and formatting used in literary Braille.

  • Braille Writing Tools:
Use of slate and stylus, Perkins Brailler, and digital Braille notetakers or displays.

  • Applied Literacy:
Integrating Braille into daily routines, schoolwork, and real-world situations (e.g., reading labels, menus, or instructions).

  • Nemeth Code & Special Subjects (as needed):
Support in learning math, music, and science codes to ensure full access to specialized content.

Who Can Benefit

Our Braille Program is ideal for:

  • Students with total or partial vision loss who require tactile literacy

Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Services

Empowering Independence Through Movement and Spatial Awareness

At New Day Learning & Therapy Clinic, our Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services are designed to support individuals who are blind or visually impaired in developing the skills needed to navigate their environments with confidence, safety, and independence.

What is Orientation and Mobility?

Orientation and Mobility is a specialized area of instruction that helps individuals understand their position in space and move through their surroundings effectively. It is a vital service that fosters independence by teaching both conceptual and practical skills needed to travel safely in familiar and unfamiliar settings.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Orientation Skills:
Learning to interpret and respond to spatial cues using auditory, tactile, and environmental information to build mental maps and understand positioning in space.
  • Mobility Skills:
Developing safe and efficient movement using techniques such as long cane travel, sighted guide, and electronic mobility devices. Instruction also includes how to navigate streets, public transportation, schools, and community spaces.
  • Sensory and Conceptual Development:
Enhancing the use of residual senses for orientation (e.g., listening for traffic patterns, feeling surface textures) and teaching essential concepts such as directionality, distance, and environmental landmarks.
  • Travel and Safety Techniques:
Learning to cross streets safely, use traffic sounds for orientation, and problem-solve during travel. Students also gain skills in route planning and navigating unexpected barriers.

Who Benefits from O&M Training?

Our O&M program supports:

  • Children and adults with visual impairments
  • Students with multiple disabilities that include vision loss
  • Families seeking to empower their child with independence in daily routines

Why O&M is Important

Effective Orientation and Mobility instruction:

  • Promotes self-confidence and autonomy
  • Facilitates academic and vocational access
  • Increases safety and awareness in real-world environments
